A couple of the possible reasons, according to the discussion section of the article, was that 1) women may have historically hunted for smaller prey (birds) thus installing a fear of women and 2) it may be an olfactory response to women.


On average, birds escaped 1 m (11% of their mean escape distance) earlier when approached by women than by men
