It’s amazing how after Trump (twice) we look back at GWB and think “He wasn’t so bad”.
He was bad though. His administration’s handling of the Iraq/Afghan war laid the groundwork for the lawlessness America is now experienceing. The Patriot Act on its own was instrumental in introducing the extreme surveillance and authoritarian oppression currently ongoing.
Seriously, Bush and his administration were monstrous. I thnk it’s easy to forget the insane amount of torture his administration took part in.

The difference between Bush and Trump was that Bush did all the evil shit with a smile. He also spoke calmly to not rile people up. We handwave all of this like “ah just politics being politics”, while he sends people to kill brown people in other countries.
Trump can’t shut the fuck up, which antagonizes everyone. His “I do what I want” attitude is egotistic. He screeches. He rambles. We feel every time this old fuck shits his pants. None of this can be handwaved, as he sends people to kill brown people here in America, while also threatening every other country.

“Better” in what sense? He’s less competent, but incompetent evil is preferable than “competent” evil. Bush was able to get nearly 90% of adults supporting him while enacting a fascist agenda, because he played by the rules and kept up pretenses and plausible deniability. Iraq and Afghanistan were just as much land grabs and wars of aggression as invading Greenland would be. The difference is that Bush was able to wield propaganda to stop people like you from recognizing it as such, at least at the time. If Trump killed every single person living in Greenland, it would not be anywhere close to the death toll of either of those wars.
Pretty much everything Trump is doing now, Bush also did, just more politely. Asking which one is worse is like asking who’s worse between Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, they are both part of the same political project, both working towards the same goals, etc. I know y’all want the current thing to be the worst thing ever, and to have come completely out of nowhere, but the reality is that Trump is just the culmination of where the right has been headed for a very long time.
He was gifted that level of support due to Americans being so shocked by 9/11 (for the record, while similarly shocked I still never supported any of his crap). While he’d likely have done better than Trump, I highly doubt he’d have achieved anywhere near that level of support without the 9/11 attacks. Just further proves how counterproductive terrorism is, IMHO - unless giving an excuse for fascism is the desired result (which, I suppose it could actually have been with long-term thinking).

Hey, at least about a third of us definitely don’t deserve this shit. There’s no real escape route for us, however - unless we happen to be quite wealthy (which seems almost mutually exclusive to me), or are otherwise exceedingly useful to another country that we’d actually want to be in.

Dubya was a terrible president and person and is responsible for a great deal of pain and suffering in the world. But I don’t think he was a literal traitor. I think he truly believed what he was doing on the international stage was right, and the fact that it benefitted his rich friends was a huge bonus.
Trump has over 30 felony convictions related to financial crimes, was found liable by a civil jury for sexual assault, has openly engaged in corruption, racism, and war crimes while conspiring with the Republicans to stack the Courts with loyalists. Now he’s occupying American cities with a gestapo (and sometimes troops) and invading and taking control of sovereign countries. He’s a fascist by any measure.
If Trump left office today, the fallout in terms of the economy, social order, and international standing would take a century to resolve.
It’s not even close. I’d 100% accept a deal that put a Bush-like asshole in charge for 20 years in trade for removing Trump from office just one month early, because every fucking week with Trump adds years of rebuilding.
We cannot allow the GOP to maintain control of Congress in the November elections.

The Patriot Act is bullshit and thw Courts should have struck it down, but Bush did actually run it through Congress and the Senate. He also got authorization from the legislature for all of his military escapades.
He did a lot of harm, but relative to the current administration he was a fucking saint.
And that’s where we’re at now.
Our country’s suffering a sucking chest wound, and given the option between what we have now and the cancer that was the neo-cons of the 2000s I’d take the neo-cons in a heartbeat. Would I rather have a true progressive administration? Absolutely. But we can’t demand perfection right now. We have to stop the bleeding and vote for the candidates most likely to win who will stop this madness.
I live in Texas. We aren’t going to elect Democrats to state-wide offices, so the best thing I can do right now is register as a Republican and vote in the primaries for the least-insane candidates, then vote blue in the general election.
